I have a 12.5 hp silver series craftsmen moter on a heavey duty mower.

My son briefly ran it without oil. I stopped him. But the motor got hot and slightly seized up. After it cooled I got the motor turning again by lubing the cylinder and putting a wrench on the crank bolt.
Now it cranks and has spark but it popping. the timing is off and the motor is not starting but it pops and backfires. How could the timing have gone out? Are the crank and cam shaft gears nylon. Could they have stripped and slipped out of time?
