I have a B&S 550 series on a Craftsman edger I bought a few months ago, and it is a good engine, but as mentioned in one of my previous reviews on a B&S 675ex, it does not like to start when warm OCCASIONALY. I wish the engine had a throttle however. Why do you guys not include throttles anymore?!!!
ProsQuiet, good on fuel
Conshard to start when warm sometimes
Yes, I recommend this product.

I love this engine! I have one on a Snapper mower, and it starts on the second pull AT MOST cold. It was put on the deck 2 years ago and has ad no maintenance. I also recently used the 5106WEB tune up kit on my aunt's mower with the same engine. It was still running great even though there was so much old grass and dirt build up on the air filter, you really couldn't tell what it was! It now runs great. The only problem with the engine mentioned before my aunt's is that when it is warm, sometimes it doesn't want to start back up. I have seen this with other reviews. Aside from that, it runs great, and quiet, but uses a lot of gas, but that is expected with any non-OHV engine. Overall a great product!
ProsQuiet
Consguzzles gas
Yes, I recommend this product.

How much hp is the 500

I have a Murray push mower big wheel, that is 20 years old. It has a Briggs and Stratton 5hp motor that has held up awesome. I am going to have to get a new mower soon because the deck is cracking really bad. I really love this mower and want to get something as close to it as possible. Especially the motor, it still cranks right up, but I am having trouble finding what I want. Help me out please.
I would suggest a B&S 675ex series. I have used 2 of them and they are powerful and easy to start. By the way, B&S rates their engines on gross torque now, not HP.

does the 500 series have an oil drain plug on the bottom of the engine?

You must tip the engine on it's side to drain the oil out of the fill plug.
