I've been repairing engines since 1972, and this is one of the absolute worst designs I've seen/worked on. While B&S are dead-on with sooo many great engines, they dropped the ball BADLY with this one.
The head gasket configuration is SO inadiquite, that a first year engineering student would know it was/is doomed to repeated failure. After 40 years of repairing engines in automative, power equipment and marine applications (all of them#, I think I've earned the right to vent on this engine's shortcoming#s), and there are several.
The latest adventure was when a customer called in the spring with a "won't start" call. Back at the shop we discovered a mouse nest the size of a Buick under the cover (we do dozens of these every year). Other than that, the cooling fins were clear, so it should have been as easy as cleaning it, and replacing the coil that had its plug wire chewed in 2 by said mice.
Installed the new coil and it wouldn't start. Threw a commpression tester on her and had 2 pounds. Bummer.
Replaced head gasket only to discover valve guides and pushrods were worn beyond spec, so compression was still low. Even then, the starter was taxed badly to turn her over. I won't even TELL you how upset I was to discover the intake lobe of the cam was worn.
A bad head gasket design leads to failure, which in turn sets in motion a series of failures cascading through the ENTIRE VALVE TRAIN.
This is a disposable engine with a VERY short life span. SHAME ON YOU B&S.

No, I do not recommend this product.

valve clearances intek15.5

As a rule of thumb, the valve lash adjustments (gap between valve and rocker arm) are as follows for the INTEK:

Intake is usually between .002 and .005 (I set them @ .003, and it works just great)

exhaust: between .005 and .007 (.006 is right-on-the-money for this little mill)

If you would like, e-mail me at fastandfairrepairs.com with your spesific engine type/code/serial# and I'll respond with a link to the B&S spec page that covers your engine.

Have a Great Day, -Jim-
