Have this engine on a generator I have recently purchased. Engine starts easily, has plenty of power,OHV design will certainly have better fuel economy than traditional L-head engines, and offers quieter operation as well. I have not ever had any problems out of any Briggs powered outdoor equipment.
ProsQuiet, easy starting, smooth opeeration, reliable, fuel efficient
Yes, I recommend this product.

I have had this engine on a John Deere D110 tractor for over three months now,and I have not had any problems with it at all. It starts right up and has more than enough power for my needs. For a single cylinder engine it is fairly quiet and I believe the OHV has alot to do with that. It is also very easy on gas,...have mowed several times and still sitting at the "full" mark on the gas gauge,if not just very slightly below it.
ProsQuiet, easy on gas, quiet for a single cylinder engine., plenty of power for my needs, easy to maintain
Yes, I recommend this product.

This engine came on a John Deere D110 tractor I purchased recently.
For a single cylinder engine,it runs smoothly, starts easily, and has plenty of power for my needs. Very little vibration at all out of a single cylinder engine. With the exception of two other mowers,...all my other mowers I have had has had a Briggs engine, and I have not ever had any reliability issues with a B&S engine. (My Toro push mower has a 6.75 HP Briggs engine on it and not a single problem out of it,either! Like my JD,the Toro starts right up as well). I don't buy ANY lawn care product unless it has B&S powering it!
ProsQuiet, easy to start, plenty of power for my needs, easy to service, smooth running
Yes, I recommend this product.

This engine has a problem!
By Mowerboy from Plainview, AR 72857, USA
Engine wears out intake push rods. Have replaced a total of 5 now when they wear down by rubbing on the glide plate. I have asked B&S if this is normal or a known problem and get a "NO" response with out any info. Have replaced rods, guide and etc and still have the problem. Other than that, the engine is great mower motor.

How old is your engine? Is it an earlier model? The problem you are having does not sound normal when it goes through that many push rods. Something is definitely wrong here!

Easy to Use
By Plywood24
I love this engine! I have one on a Snapper mower, and it starts on the second pull AT MOST cold. It was put on the deck 2 years ago and has ad no maintenance. I also recently used the 5106WEB tune up kit on my aunt's mower with the same engine. It was still running great even though there was so much old grass and dirt build up on the air filter, you really couldn't tell what it was! It now runs great. The only problem with the engine mentioned before my aunt's is that when it is warm, sometimes it doesn't want to start back up. I have seen this with other reviews. Aside from that, it runs great, and quiet, but uses a lot of gas, but that is expected with any non-OHV engine. Overall a great product!

I have one on a Toro 20090 mower and mine doesn't seem to guzzle gas! No maintenance? Well,...there's part of the problem if it seems to guzzle gas and a clogged air filter will cause that,...no different than a car!

This is a great reliable engine.
By smallengineman from Long Island New York
I bought my Toro 20090 push mower brand new back in 2009 with this engine on it. I have had nothing but good luck with this engine since day one. It always starts on the first or second pull and has never given me any trouble. I use my mower for about 40 minutes once a week during the mowing season. This engine has very good power in tall grass and its quiet. The sound of the blade spinning under the mower deck is louder than the engine!!!. I also have to say that for a flat head this engine seems to be good on gas. It will be interesting to see what will last longer. The alloy deck on my mower or this engine?. So far both are showing no signs of wear. I always hose off the under side of the mower after I'm done using it. ( Make sure the air filter is facing up when the mower is on its side). Then I wipe down the top of the mower with a soft damp rag to try and keep it clean. I always change the oil, spark plug, air filter and pre-filter at the start of the season. I've only used Briggs 30 weight oil in all my engines since most small engine shops and big box stores sell it

I have to agree with you,...I have the same exact mower you do with exact same engine,...and yes,it is a very dependable engine. Like you also stated,it's pretty good on gas given it's a flat(L- style)head engine. Now that I have had mine just over a year,I should do a youtube video review of it. Come to think of it,...I need to put in a new air filter and spark plug,...it's due for those even though it starts and runs fine. I use gas stabilizer all the time as well,...my choice of fuel stabilizer is Yamalube Fuel Stabilizer &Conditioner..,same fuel stabilizer I use for the outboard motor on my fishing boat,...no problems with using it whatsoever,...and the Yamalube gas stabilizer is alcohol-free!

Very Durable, Dependable
By Atattention from South East Texas
I have this unit also for about 6 years. it has over 800 hours on it ( that is a lot) burns no oil, output on generator is good, starts easy with good fuel, no frills or bells and whistles. This is a very good general portable generator. Great for power outages , deer and duck camp and so on. Only draw back is will not start tools or appliance with a large surge load to them. Is the reason I bought the Storm Chaser. Now this IS a great, dependable, long life unit. Ran for 24/7 during hurricane IKE (except for fueling and servicing) for a elderly couple, never missed a beat and may have saved their lives. Is a good unit.

Very dependable and durable
Posted September 28, 2012
I just bought a generator like this one this morning(9/28/12). If I should ever be without power for any length of time, the main appliance I want to keep going is the refrigerator,a light or two,and radio/TV. As an amateur radio operator, the generator would also need to run radio communications equipment if necessary. My house is all electric with baseboard heat, and electric water heater. I can control heat for each room in the house. I was told that a 5,000 watt generator with 6,250 starting/surge watts would be enough for no more than what I would be running. This is my very first time buying a generator,...I hope i bought one big enough for my uses/purposes! 8,000 hours and no problems?Very impressive!

have 17.5 HP seven year old riding mower. Have replaced air filter, spark plug, fuel filter. I can't keep it running

Is there any detail on how to clean the carb out, that can be provided. I can pour gas in the carb and get it started but it shuts down again.
Are there any diagrams that I can use, or ideas.
This has been a great engine up until now.
What about the gas you're using? Did you,...or perhaps,do you,...use fuel stabilizer in your gas? If not,...your carb might be plugged up with deposits. Not sure about carb cleaning on this engine since I am a first time owner of this particular model engine on a riding mower! I would check in on a service manual for your engine concerning carb diagrams. Don't know about you,but I am using Sta-Bil Marine Formula fuel stabilizer in my mower,...or the Yamalube stabilizer I use on my boat's 15 HP Yamaha outboard,...and not a single problem using either one.
