Pre-cleaner Oiling

For many years I have used an oil-saturated fabric or foam precleaner around the paper filter cartridge on my lawn mower engines. The oiled media effectively catches microscopic particles of dirt and dust that might otherwise pass through the paper filter and potentially harm the engine. I recently purchased a new mower with a B&S engine that uses the 795066 filter and precleaner. The instructions say that the precleaner should not be oiled. Why? Why not?
