When this thing runs it does fine. However, it fouls spark plugs rapidly. First plug lasted about 5 mowings. When the mower wouldn't start I did some research and discovered that others have had trouble with the spark plug. I replaced it and got two good mowings before the problems have started again. I can clean the plug and get it to start but it only runs for a short time before the plug is fouled again. Not sure where the defect is but it is not good.

Mower died just 5 weeks after warranty ran out even though I changed oil, filter and spark plug frequently. Very upset with engine and mower itself.

I have always had Briggs&Stratton engines on everything that has a motor on it from snow blowers to power washers. There has been great improvements with the engines over the years. The latest example is with the lawn mower, it starts on either the first or second pull if even it has been sitting for an extended period of time. I like the feature of automatic choke so there is no guess work to start it. The unit is extremely dependable cuts all levels of grass with no loss in power and stops within 1 to 2 seconds as designed. The only mod I added was an inline shut off so I dont have to worry about old gas sitting in the carb over the winter.

While it worked it was great.
But if it mows the lawn only 3 times it is useless so the overall rating has to be nothing other than POOR.
As I said above, mowed lawn 3 times in less than one month. 3rd time engine began to sputter part-way through.
Will no longer start. Plug (RJ2YLE) will not spark.
Cannot find replacement. All local shops, retail outlets and online tell me possible 30 days+ to stock.
Why did B&S use a part that is NOT available?
Apparently I need to pay $200+ to buy a new mower just to get the spark plug.
No, I do not recommend this product.

I am sorry to hear about the difficulties you are having locating the spark plug. The spark plug RJ12YLE can be replaced with the Briggs & Stratton genuine part number 799876. Additional information on the spark plug for this engine can be located here: http://bit.ly/p4Pc6M

Champion RJ2YXLE spark plug that came with it defective out of box, failed completely after two uses. Could not find replacement under this number. Used common J17LM instead (fits hole and sparks OK), runs much better now. Not sure long term, or why B&S chose to use an unavailable part. They need to fix this.

I have today used my mower with a B&S engine with 7.25 torque. I have very fine grass, and this is easily cut. This is my second B&S engine. Would have liked to purchase a snapper in preference to the craftsman Platinum mower, but price higher

Happy/ and recomend

I should say that the last mower I bought, I purchased 22yrs. ago and this mower has started 1st. or 2nd pull every yr. I had absolutely no trouble with it and did not take very good care of it....would still be using it but the body is rusted out and enough with the duck tape and wire...but still runs great! I think they should take this one apart and see what they did right....
This new mower out of the box started first pull and mowed great....grass was a little tall, but the mower went right through it and did not bog down at all, I have noticed that when the grass is wet it doesn't hold as much grass in the bag...this is not a complaint just observation, I'm happy with this mower...and hope for another 22yrs.

broke on 3rd use
Posted April 1, 2012
I purchased this mower in the fall of 2011 at Sears, used it twice in the fall and parked it for the winter. On 03/29/12 I started it just fine for use, restarted it several more times fine. Shut it off to clear sticks and went to restart it and the pull cord came full pull but then nothing. No start or recoil. Sears takes a month to fix and I couldn't wait that long again to repair. Took apart and the recoil spring had broke where it was narrow and pierced. I bent the spring enough to get one more pull and finished the yard. Now I need to spend $38.00 for a new Starter-rewind assembly in order to use it a fourth time. Not happy.
