Bought this mower new from Sears. It worked great for the first few uses and then it wouldn't start. The spark plug was fouled and I was able to get it running for 1 more mow thinking I could just go to the auto store and pick up another plug... not the case. Why would B&S use a plug that nobody carries, fails rapidly and can't be cross referenced? Of course if you use a different plug it likely voids the warranty. Regret buying. Thought it was a safe bet with B&S and Craftsman name on it.

This engine has given me major starting problems. I purchased a Sears mower ( really stupid of me) 5 monthe ago. It ran fine for one mow of my lawn.. Since then nothing but starting problems; will not idle, and then will not start for several days .t When it does start it dies within a couple of minutes..Possible a bad plug, but I have been unable to find one to buy. I have major trust issues with this engine. Tried to return to sear but they refuse to accept my paperwork. I have no receipt from sears because I purchased it over the net . NO support Sears will be bankrupt before end of 2012.

As usual, Craftsman does not stand by their products. This will be the last Craftsman/Briggs combo I will buy. The last Briggs engine I had blew 2 months after the warranty expired, and Sears basically said "Tough S$#@." I bought this mower about a month ago. Mowing the grass, run out of gas, put gas back in it, and it wouldn't start. Could not find the receipt anywhere in the house. Sears said "Oh, well" once again. I start working on it myself, only to discover the spark plug was no good. Sears could have saved a customer for a 5 dollar part. "Oh, Well!" Now I have a Kohler engine. Runs great, is quiet, and strong.

Used this lawnmower 4 times before the spark plug failed. No cross reference to the spark plug...New spark plugs are not any better. Buyer beware..you buy a Sears lawn mower 600-700 series you will wish you didn't.I'm taking this back to Sears for a refund.

After three seasons of residential use and with proper mtce, etc. the engine blew up; the rod came thru the side of the block housing. Have never seen a lawnmower engine totally self destruct like this one did. I have used the mower about 12-14 times a summer for three summers and each time is only approx. 3/4 to 1 hr. This to me, is totally unacceptable quality and am really disappointed in Briggs & Stratton. I have maintained the engine per the owners manual.

Another Engine Blew up
Posted September 25, 2012
I was close to finishing my 3rd season with my Craftsman lawnmower and the same exact thing happened to me: rod failed and blew side housing of engine. I couldn't believe it! Sears must be influencing the specifications of these engines. I had also performed great maintenance such as changing oil, air filter, etc.
My dad has old mowers with B&S and they were bulletproof. That is not the case of today's mowers. It is frustrating because, the "disposable society" and "false economy" are everywhere! Use it once, then toss it and buy another one. It keeps greedy executives and investors entertained.
Three generations from now our future generations will pay the price when our landfills can take no more...

This is my second Briggs engine this year the first one was the 140cc engine that had stalling issues so i returned it and got this 190 cc 6.75 torque engine and what a difference. This engine is more powerful and runs a 100 times better. The engine takes two pulls to get it started and it runs smooth and cuts the grass with no problems.I would have given it 5 stars if it started with one pull but it's not a deal breaker.

I just had to replace the Champion RJ2YXLE spark plug. It doesn't help that the serial number doesn't exist in O'Reilly's database. I hope the new non champion plug I bought last a lot longer. I mean come on, did they really have to save a few cents on the worlds most unreliable spark plug. Just google the plug and you find a bunch of people having the same problem. Should of gone with the Honda motor or shopped somewhere else besides Sears. Well we are stuck with it so I hope it runs for at least a year or too.

B&S Spark plug in manual is part 799876 which is apparently the new and nearly unknown Champion RJ2YLE. The plug in the engine is labeled RJ2YXLE. Unnecessary confusion here!!
Bought the similar engine/mower for my girlfriend earlier. The B&S plug called for in the B&S manual is 802592 which is Champion RJ19LM yet the Craftsman Manual says to use RC12YC. The engine came with a RJ19LM in it. Somebody needs to get their stuff straight!!
Otherwise engine runs great. Another review complains of carb replacements - may I suggest that he may be experiencing the "benefits" of ethanol/gasohol use. (It loves dirt, gum, and water and is not unusual for it to muck up outboards and lawnmowers.)

Spark Plug
Posted June 11, 2012
Do you know where to get the spark plug, RJ2YXLE/RJ2YLE? I can't find it anywhere either!!!!!!!!!! I'm not a happy camper. My lawnmower is two months old and only used once. It is refurbished, but looks brand new. Got this one because I left my other new one in the shop and it was lost at Sears. :-(

BOUGHT 2, BOTH HAVE SAME PROBLEM
Posted July 17, 2012
Bought 2 of these engines (Troy Bilt and Craftsman), not a good idea. Both have issues with carburetor, 3 seasons each.. Will start, then quit as if no fuel is getting through. I can manually move springs around choke/carburetor and engine will increase HP. I take care of my engines and these seem to fail prematurely. There seems to be an issue with the 2 springs which work in tandem for auto throttle/choke. Don'e think I will be purchasing a BG again.

Never by Sears Again
Posted July 17, 2012
Runs quiet, however (and this THE complaint from everyone I read) Replacing the spark plug is, so far, IMPOSSIBLE. Everywhere I go, the Champion RJ2YXLE can not be found and forget about cross reference charts. Sears is completely useless when it comes to customer service on this item. Love the Briggs motor but not this one ever again.
